Democrat William Hickman Moore won the Seattle mayoralty on the Municipal Ownership ticket in a tight contest. Party rivals Riplinger carried several wards but Moore pulled ahead as returns came in, with the final tally showing a narrow plurality and a likely uncontested council slate dominated by Republicans.
Partial returns show Moore holding a narrow plurality in several wards with a later recount keeping him around four percent. Republican candidates dominate council seats in most wards while M O challengers trail. union labor voters favor Moore in precincts with union presence and charter amendments pass.
John Riplinger arrived at the comptroller’s office about 9 30 this morning worn by the campaign and election night defeat. When asked for a statement on the result he said he had nothing to say.
The Star scores a premier scoop in Beattie by announcing Judge William Hickman Moore as Seattle’s mayor in two early extras, beating the Times and selling thousands before 10 a.m. The public learns of Moore’s election ahead of Riplinger’s reports, a notable achievement for The Star.

Judge Moore, the successful mayoralty candidate, spent the night at the Municipal Ownership building. He asserted the Giese count was progressing and that his path to victory was assured. He expressed regret only that more of his candidates were not elected and pledged to religiously carry out all campaign promises.
Rev Dr Milton Ross and his wife and infant daughter Grace narrowly escaped death during a Chinese mob attack in Nanchang that killed six associates.
