The Dakota ran aground off Shirahama, leaking badly, and is sinking as crews abandon ship. Passengers were evacuated safely by lifeboats to the Tokai and shore, with other vessels and warships standing by to render aid as the craft lists toward the water.
Full passenger list shows first cabin travelers from Yokohama and Kobe led by German and American names. second cabin includes families and notable adults. Shanghai lists W and wife Ed and others. Hongkong aboard includes S L Shoenfeld party, Ryan and family, Denny, Hazelton, Harris and Chauncey Thomas, plus several women. steerage notes fourteen Chinese.
Officials of the Great Northern Steamship Company received word that the vessel Dakota was sinking after striking off Yokohama. Messages from passengers’ relatives and cables from Yokohama and San Francisco were sent to inform families and ease anxiety.
The Beattie, with 94 passengers and a captain on the bridge, sailed for the Orient in February. Among the passengers were H. A. Schoenfeld, Mr. and Mrs. L. Schoenfeld, Mrs. Joseph Gardner, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Thompson and daughter Mabel. Several foreign and U S officers were aboard bound for different posts in the Orient.
A cablegram from Merwich reports A Behoenfelt of Stand company and companions aboard are safely landed and resting in Bug town with their parents and Mrs Behoenfeit and Gardner. Another message from Yokohama confirms Mr and Mrs J R Thompson and Miss Mabel Thompson, passengers on the Dakota, are safe at the consulate.
Emili Francke, a well known officer, headed the Americas Line at New York. Dakota associate officers named with Captain Francke include Chief Officer Joseph Roberts Senior Second Officer Armend and Junior Officer Cline.
L. W. Th vice president of the Great Northern Railway spoke with The Starman on March 4 saying only press reports are available. He noted reports of a panel beat and passenger safety while promising further details soon as James J Hill, president, is in New York.

Julius Nelson, a known Georgetown resident, was arrested after a failed attempt at criminal assault on the wife of a prominent citizen. He was captured after a pursuit by Officer Jones, who fired three shots. Nelson surrendered only after being beaten into unconsciousness.

Two men died and a dozen were seriously hurt in a head on crash inside Fort Lawton grounds at 6 PM Sunday. The incident involved inbound Motorman D. McKay and outbound Motorman R. W. Glazier on the Seattle Electric line, with faulty block lights blamed for misinterpreted signals and a near second collision as wrecking crews rushed to the scene. Victims were treated at Fort Lawton and Pacific hospitals including Berwick Inga Ola and Gunda Seamon among others.
Judge Richard A. Ballinger will take over as United States commissioner of public lands today, succeeding William A. Richards. The announcement comes from Washington as Ballinger assumes the post.
