Great Northern Train Reported Wiped Out By Avalanche

Everett Washington March 1 Great Northern train stalled near Wellington after February 24 has probably been destroyed by an avalanche. Thirty passengers aboard may have perished as wires and lines were severed by heavy snow. Railroad crews sent relief trains and medical staff, but details remain unknown as communication with Wellington broke down.

Indian Murders Two Over Girl on Quinault Reservation

On the Quinault reservation Fred Pope, an Indian, shot and killed William Holt and Adam Hawk two Indian policemen after a quarrel over an Indian girl. Pope is at large threatening to kill five more Indians before ending his life as authorities rush to the scene.

Winchester on trial for illegal registration scheme in ward

Frank EB Winchester a leading worker in fraudulent registration was on trial after indictment in a case alleging illegal registration. He lived at 2902 First Ave and recruited to reside in the Fifth ward to serve as registration clerk and judge of election. He handled precinct books in the Third precinct of the Fifth ward as large number of Mont ere registered by Gill workers. He aimed to help floaters vote and was arrested by Grand Jury detective Marion. Juror Zimmerman expressed belief that floaters were registered wholesale and faulted Gill machine tactics in the primaries.

Pacific Mall Company Bluffs on Exclusive Coast Contract

Secretary Dickinson testified before a Senate committee that the Pacific Mail Steamship Company strong-armed for an exclusive coast carrying contract and that the government lacked authority to grant it. He warned withdrawal of ships would force a risky standoff and suggested government mail steamship service as a countermeasure.

Puget Sound Electric Rates Ordered to Reestablish Past Fares

The state railway commission orders reestablishment within 10 days of pre October 17 1909 trip rates for Earlington Seattle and Renton Junction. New one way Seattle Tacoma and intermediate routes allowed. Commutation books limited to 42 rides monthly at half the old round trip rate. Company may appeal but is generally prepared to close the incident. Jacob Purth president could not say follow up actions.
