Troops faced a mob in Prussia as rioters pelted them with paving stones. Six gendarmes were injured while windows and lamp posts were smashed. Bayonets were deployed and volleys fired as reinforcements arrived and the king conferred with war and chamber leaders.
Secretary Alger wired General Shafter from Washington to hasten departure of transports and ensure speedy return of volunteers. Shafter proposed either sending vessels at once with fewer troops or waiting until next week to sail full. The decision favored sending home the volunteers rather than reinforcements.
Mrs McKinley continues to improve though confined to her room at an early June Washington hospital. The attending physician reported no cause for alarm and expressed cautious optimism about her condition.

R W Jones assistant engineer in the Cascade tunnel project visits town. He is a University of 1896 graduate and well known locally. Harlan L Smith from the Museum of Natural History, New York, is in the city for the summer to study Sound Indian communities and organize preservation work for the New York museum.
Mary Goodell a 16 year old North Seattle resident answered an ad for girls at the Hella Union concert hall. She was instructed to wink at men and bring them into a box to buy drinks. Detective Barbee intervened, the girl was taken to police headquarters, and entrusted to Police Matron Taylor. Meanwhile Walter Latham, a longtime roomer, fled with $300 from Mrs. Kurmann on Twenty first Avenue near Madison Street. He boarded the Puebla to San Francisco. detectives pursued and notified SF police.
Seattle and Tacoma compete to host Whitworth College as chamber of commerce meets to discuss securing a site.
