A dispatch from Belleau Wood reports American forces advancing 400 yards under heavy German resistance, capturing machine guns and pushing to new lines. Germans bombarded by gas, reinforce trenches, and occupy dugouts as Americans seize captured material and endure harsh conditions.
Italian forces crossed the Piave on four points along a 20 mile front and established bridgeheads at Falze Nervesa Ponte Di Piave and Capo Sile. They recaptured Montello crest and most of the Piave line, destroyed remaining Piave bridges, and pursued retreating Austrian divisions with heavy losses. Forty five thousand prisoners and vast war booty were reported as American airmen aided the drive.
