In Boise Idaho on June 24 attorney Darrow opened his address for Orchard in the Haywood trial, claiming the killer of Governor Steunenberg acted in revenge and not on Haywood or the Western Federation. He attacked imputations against Haywood Moyer and Pettibone and defended the federation as a workingmen’s movement aimed at eight hour laws and political reform.
Consternation filled the street as Acting Chief of Police Willard ordered all Sunday groceries shut in accordance with the 1881 Sunday closing law. Grocers, deli dealers, and flat dwellers rely on Sunday sales for their weekly needs while police vow enforcement while the statute remains on the books.
Ernest J. W. Poolton, 15, student at a Seattle high school, died after a lamp he was carving in his bedroom exploded and set the house on fire on Fremont Avenue. He ran outside with his mother pursuing as flames spread. doctors could not save him. Father Rev. G. C. Poolton is a Puget Sound Conference Methodist pastor.
A Seattle student, Gustavus Adolphus Schoening, 20, who studied mining and engineering at the state university, was found dead in Elliott Bay near Madison Street. He had suffered paresis from hard work and planned to rest with his uncle in Martinez, California. his body awaits direction from the uncle. He came to the U S in 1902 from Germany and previously worked as a ship's carpenter in Bremerton.
In Boise City a civil engineer H M Hedges shot building contractor A B Whiteway five times in the Idaho hotel after confronting him over charges involving the Haywood case. Whiteway survived with hospital reports uncertain while Hedges was arrested. Governor Gooding and Detective McParland were nearby on the same floor.
