First American Submarine and Early Underwater Weaponry
A historical overview traces the first American built submarine from 1775 to later Civil War attempts. It notes David Bushnell’s 1775 craft used against the Eagle in New York harbor, its failed sharp screw torpedo, and early attempts such as McClintock and Howgate’s 1860s hand propelled craft, leading to John P. Holland’s 1881 development in Paterson New Jersey.
