About 300000 garment workers in New York state plan a strike next month to press for shorter hours better factory sanitation improved working conditions union recognition and adoption of the union label. Leaders say the time is ripe for decisive action after long building strength.
The Lexow committee at City Hall heard testimony on gambling houses and bribe schemes. Witnesses Meredith, Wappenstein, Edwards, and George described payments, attempts to influence officials, and alleged money handling tied to Chief Considine and police officers. Detective Wappenstein denied all charges.

The transport Pennsylvania arriving from Manila brings 12 military prisoners to San Francisco. Among them two are sentenced to five years each at hard labor for desertion from the Fortieth volunteers.
Judge Mell signs the death warrant for Nordstrom and fixes the date of execution. Prosecutor Fulton and defense counsel Lewis argued pro and con before a crowded court. Nordstrom, under the old law, will be hanged at the county courthouse with Sheriff carrying out the sentence. Wm Mason, father of Willie Mason who was shot by the condemned man, was in attendance.
A well known cigar dealer, identified as Willama, was arrested at 2:20 PM on a warrant and brought before Judge George. The case challenges operating trade under the state law recently enacted by the legislature, with all city retail cigar dealers to participate for victory by the machine and possible supreme court review if needed. Detective Phillips led the arrest following an attorney’s office action from ca. R. Pingree is charged in the related case.
