American forces in France repelled a major German assault at Xivray near Toul. About 300 enemy dead were counted, with 114 Americans holding the village against 900 attackers amid fierce street fighting and an intense artillery barrage.
Washington reports that American troop support for Italy will arrive soon as Austria attacks. In line with Wilson and Baker pledges US forces will join Italian and allied troops though not in large numbers to demonstrate U S backing. American aviators and other forces have been in Italy but no soldiers in the trenches yet.
Paris June 17 French forces strengthened their hold on the western Marne front while repelling German raids in the Vosges according to the military communiqué.
London June 17. A hostile airplane crossed the Kent coast at noon but turned back over the sea after anti aircraft guns opened fire. The RAF announced no damage or casualties.
