Seattle faces a clash over reopening an alley from Jackson to King between First and Railroad avenues now occupied by the Schwabacher building. The vacated strip, 16 feet by 120, is valued at about $36,000 front foot and has long been disputed as a public benefit. Critics say the city was robbed in vacating the land, while former officials and Schwabacher advocates argued the alley had no city value. Councilman Mullen has opposed vacating avenues, warning authorities cannot foresee all future needs.
