Seamen’s Union Presses Cause in Pacific Coast Lockout

Joseph T. Laddy of the Sailors’ Union argues the Pacific coast lockout is a response by shipowners to crush unionism. He notes prior wage demands for 1493 cents per diem, the San Francisco earthquake disruption, and a later general lockout by the United Steamship Transportation Association. He contends crews include non English speakers and insists vacancies remain at union offices, framing the conflict as a fight for solidarity and employment.
