Chicago Dives Into Mourning After Eastland Disaster

Chicago observed a citywide day of mourning with offices closed flags at half mast and bells tolling as about 600 people lost in the Eastland disaster were laid to rest. Funeral processions clogged the streets and hearses ran short prompting improvised vehicles to bear coffins to various cemeteries. Grave diggers labored across the city as the tragedy’s toll deepened the city’s grief.
