Fred L. Boalt recalls a meeting with Congressman Dill at the Cleveland Press era. The piece contrasts veteran reporters with new cubs, noting Dill’s confident, curious style and the veteran writer’s resentment of rookie eagerness.
Lon Dean the alleged abductor of Ernest Empey, held in a hut on Sheep Mountain, escaped after Empey was found chained to a tree and rangers aided by cowboys captured Dean. Empey’s relatives feared the ransom would be paid. Empey was later freed by his own escape.
London papers praise the note as firm and unambiguous. The Star calls the language plain and grave, warning Germany that further attacks imperiling Americans would be regarded as deliberately unfriendly. The News says the note is firmly worded and will be unpleasant to the Kaiser and his entourage.
Stockton July 24 Charles J Haas prominent Stockton businessman and Stockton Savings and Loan Society director killed himself by shooting through the heart last night in his jewelry store. He had a nervous breakdown two years ago and recently lost his wife.
Fifty Seattle Welsh singers travel to San Francisco for a national eisteddfod a large song festival. They compete against groups from across the United States for twenty five thousand dollars in cash prizes.

A barrel of chloride of potassium exploded at the Gosho drug store at 5223 Jackson street, Saturday noon, blowing off the owner S Hasegawa both arms and injuring Gosho's nephew G Enomoto. Hasegawa died or is believed to die soon. he was rushed to Providence hospital. A small fire started as the blast wrecked the shop. Hasegawa was married with three children living at 919 Washington street.
A Friday afternoon brawl at the Thompson shack on Elliott avenue and Clay Street involved longshoremen Louis Thompson and W. Loury and Thompson's wife. Loury refused to leave, Thompson struck Loury with a baseball bat, and Loury stabbed Thompson. Thompson hospitalized, Loury jailed.
The Eastland excursion steamer capsized with around 2,000 aboard on the Chicago river. At least 1,500 people perished and hundreds were trapped inside as rescue teams cut plates to reach victims. Captain Pederson and First Mate Fisher were arrested at noon under orders from the deputy police chief.
Ten thousand spectators jammed South Clark Street as Captain Pederson and First Mate Fisher were led from the dock guarded by police. Rescue efforts continued amid panicked crowds while divers worked to right the Eastland and recover victims.
The Eastland formerly owned by Eastland Navigation Co. operated between Cleveland Put-in-Bay and Cedar Point. Condemnation threats followed a panic after the vessel lurched and nearly capsized. On a moonlight run it struck a breakwater near its dock.
