Raised to fifty dollar bill crime case at Monroe reformatory

Charles Berenson, 36, and his wife Divelyn were arrested after Berenson, identified by a former inmate, allegedly passed a raised one dollar to fifty dollar silver certificate. They admit purchasing clothing with the note but deny knowing it was altered. Secret Service Capt Thomas B Foster says the bill was created with crude scratch work and passed through two clerks before detection. They are held for hearing before a U S commissioner.
