Still Arguing Jitney Tan In Legal Standoff
Superior Judge Boyd J Tall Assistant Corporation Counsel C Ewing and Attorney W R ford argued for jitney operators seeking a court order to compel Comptroller Harry W Carroll to certify signatures on an initiative petition. Carroll argues full name verification is practically impossible, a point disputed by the city. The court already quashed mandamus to require signature certification, with further amendments possible as the case resumes.

Beverages and Medicines in Jamaica Ginger Case
A jury failed to decide if Jamaica ginger is a beverage or medicine in the D. W. Larke case and he and his clerk were discharged after six hours. Larke, owner of a First Ave pharmacy, faced a charge for selling 16 ounces to a customer, two above the legal limit. The defense argued Jamaica ginger is essentially a medicine, not a beverage, so the sale was lawful. The case will be reset for trial. Co. BR. Raines was found guilty and fined $250 by Federal Judge Frank Rudkin.
