In a municipal court this morning Judge George ruled John Considine bondable with 20000 and Tom Considine with 2500. He stated murder in the first degree remains nonbailable, but the brothers would be held for trial with bail. Bondsmen search to file today, freeing them tonight if approved.
Three non-union machinists at Vulcan Iron works quit after claiming underpayment and scabbing. They joined the Machinists' union at headquarters on First Avenue and say pay was $2.59 instead of an agreed $3.25. Two Puget Sound Iron Works workers also left, leaving one non-union man at Vulcan.
In Washington this afternoon a murder indictment was returned against Lolanda Bonnie who lured James Ayers a government census clerk to his hotel room on the 18th of last month. The coroner’s jury heard Bonnie claim she killed Ayers accidentally during an alleged assault attempt.
Lottie 12 of Hornetiaville N moved to the morgue after dying this morning, bringing the Marshall wreck toll on the Chicago and Alton line to twenty one.
Excitement ran through Chicago traders as grain prices jumped with wheat up 12 percent and corn about 13.8 percent. The rise followed a Rainless stretch in key corn states sparking broad buying pressure in New York and elsewhere.
William Tracey a boiler maker for Moran Pros Co died at his home 11271 Tenth avenue at 11 last night after awakening his wife and saying he felt ill. He left a widow and two children. Remains were at Bonney and Stewart's where an autopsy by Coroner Wiltaie and Tr. Ostrom found death caused by heart trouble.
The Steamer Victorian under Capt. John Roberts of Dodwell & Co arrived from Lynn Canal ports this morning with 56 cabin and 26 second class passengers and a small shipment of gold about 75000 dollars. Of the gold on board 25000 was consigned to a local banking house and the rest belonged to about six passengers. Forty Dawsonites came down on the occasion.
Comptroller Dawes received the receiver's report on the Seventh National bank of New York. The estimated recoverable assets would yield depositors about 8 cents on the dollar.
Aberdeen announces a new weekly newspaper to debut around August with J. W. Phillips as publisher and former editor of the Ilwaco Journal leading the venture.
Washington reports dissatisfaction at Machinists' headquarters over Newport News workers giving up the nine hour day and returning to the old scale. President O'Connell says the Newport News action lacked obedience to the May 20 strike order and shows wavering, unlikely to affect other strikes.
The rivers and harbors congressional committees spent yesterday visiting waterways near Fairhaven Whatcom and Port Townsend. In each town the visitors received open hospitality and courteous reception.
The civil service commission upheld Chief Sullivan’s removal of A. J. Mefford for neglecting his duty during a gunfight that killed Chief William L. Meredith. Mefford served ten years on the force and had earlier faced a suspension for taking fine money from fallen women, an outcome upheld after a tribunal in Seattle.
The National Educational association adjourned today from its annual convention in Detroit. Attendance records show this year’s turnout is the largest in the association’s history.
Pittsburg July 12. President Shaffer of the Amalgamated association pressed for swift action at today’s joint conference with steel trust officials. He was discontent with yesterday’s meeting and indicated that something must be done at once. Trust representatives aim for settlement without a strike, with earlier indications of a likely agreement today.
Mrs Mary Hanna divorced wife of Dan Hanna arrives in New York with right arm in a sling after eluding police to resist restraining order. She refuses to speak, and it is believed an injury occurred when she climbed a back fence during the escape.
Patrick Burne of Vancouver, famed as the Cattle King, heads a British Columbia and Kootenay market firm. He cites 606 009 cattle in Northwest provinces with 4% to be sold in three months and forecasts growth in Alaska and Philippine meat trades. His brother Dominick runs northern business from Dawson. Burns sees Canadian stock growing into large packing industries within years.
Judge Wm. Clancy of Butte was entertained at dinner last evening at the Rainier Grand hotel by Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Ronald. Ronald and Clancy were friends and fellow practitioners in Eding, Mo.
Telegraph from Dawson reports George O Brien awaiting execution for the murder of three men. He has had his head shaved and wears convict stripes. A death watch keeps vigil day and night and his meals are cut up before delivery to his cell, though he eats regularly and sleeps well.
Beattie Automatic Telephone Co. agrees with John A. Moebling Bone Co. of Trenton New Jersey for a 500000 dollar lead encased copper wire cable purchase. The shipment will start from Trenton as fast as produced and funds Seattle system construction. W J Barrett San Francisco handles the deal for Beattie with Claypool supervising for the company. Barrett has 16 years with Moebling and is a prominent Republican figure.
Pierre July 12 The governor appoints A R B Kittredge of Sioux Falls to fill the unexpired term of Senator Kyle deceased. Kittredge was Republican committeeman from South Dakota in 1892 and 18%. He is unmarried.
A near-confirmation from a Treasury official names the Yesler block site for the federal building in Seattle. The 240 by 256 foot parcel at the old library block between James and Jefferson streets and Third and Fourth avenues costs 209000, the full appropriation.
The Victoria reports a pleasant uneventful voyage from Skagway with Alaska news up to the 7th. A mail pouch carried by Queen to Skagway and then Sitka on the Farallon was misrouted to Skagway Briagway by Davis, delaying the Dolphin and Beattie post office delivery due to misinterpretation of the purser’s instructions.
The Moore Investment Co plans to let the contract for its new building at Second and Seneca tomorrow. Hale-Kennedy Contract Co of Portland is named as the likely bidder, with John Hale unavailable for comment. Saunders & Lawton deny any change to the plans shifting from an office to a hotel building.
The yacht Independence suffered the loss of its topmast shortly after starting, yet continued racing. Columbia led early and ultimately won the 15 mile spin, with Constitution third as Independence fought on. In notes from Nothe say, Shamrock I beat Shamrock I by one minute.
Mrs. Hertha Cremer appeared in Judge Cann's court yesterday afternoon asking for a warrant against Mrs. Hasken. Cremer filed a complaint charging assault and battery. Details are not known and both sides are quiet. The matter is to be aired this afternoon before Judge Cann.
Norfolk July 12 The Spanteh steamship Urirte was lost yesterday on the Great Gulf banks. It was among the most valuable Spanish merchantmen afloat with wealth and cargo valued at 400000 dollars.
Butte dispatch reports Sheriff Bonner of Great Falls leading a posse of expert riflemen from Chinook toward Bear Paw Pool ranch with nearby county posses to pursue three Montana train robbers believed entrenched on People's creek 75 miles from Chinook. A bloody battle is not ruled out.
The Cottage returns from Quartermaster Harbor dry dock with a new wheel and tail shaft, overhauled machinery, and a fresh paint job. Captain H H Lloyd now commands as she sails tonight for Lynn Canal ports and plans a ten day Alaska run via Vancouver, Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway with a heavy cargo and 200 passengers.
