The New York jurist Alton B Parker is chosen as the party's standard bearer after a tumultuous session lasting through the night. Scattered votes from Idaho, Washington and West Virginia aided Parker, lifting his total to 685, surpassing the 667 needed for nomination. Bryan urged restraint as anti Parker factions pressed for time and attacked Parker and his backers.
In St Louis on July 9 bold reports say Judson Harmon of Ohio is nearly chosen as the vice presidential candidate, with New York Pennsylvania Ohio Missouri delegates leaning Harmon. A conference in Sheehan’s room discussed options, while Senator Daniel of Virginia and Parker support and Hearst rep Dubois influence the talks as votes remained indecisive.
At the St. Louis convention Bryan delivered a forceful defense of his long service, admitting fatigue yet insisting he remained true to Democracy. He argued for continued party unity, attacked militarism, and warned against Roosevelt’s doctrine of brute peace while pledging to fight to defeat the Republican ticket.

W H Barr a known keyhole operative is arrested on a charge of intercepting the US mails and bound over to the grand jury. Barr, once allied with Bussell then with Mrs Bussell against Bussell, supported Miss Violet Ball in the divorce case and faced a police court battle. He claims he acted as a detective and informer and has a prior record including a red flannel shirt theft. Barr was formerly a Santa Fe spotter and was once hung in effigy.
Good news for Juneau as Treadwell Gold Mining extends operations from Treadwell to Silver Bow basin behind Juneau. A new mine will be opened with a 600 lamp mill, creating hundreds of jobs and a bright outlook for the city. J Kaufman of Kaufman Bros reports optimism for the town.
Hutchineon and others file a federal complaint against the city of Seattle seeking to have the council’s trading tamp ban ordinance declared unconstitutional and void. They claim their business is legitimate and would boost trade, noting contracts with 176 stores and an estimated net profit of $6,000 annually.
A Seattle post office clerk Reverend Cecar A. Smith confessed to a year of mail theft totaling about 60 cents and two stamps. Inspectors Wayland and Flavin let him go home to tell his wife before a marshal arrived, allowing his escape and prompting officials to question duty and procedure.
Harris, a colored man recently convicted of living with a fallen woman, was sentenced by Superior Judge Tallman this morning to one year and fined 1000 dollars. Harris gave notice of appeal. The body of Mrs. Sarah F E Johnson, who died suddenly at Lester yesterday, was brought to this city today by Deputy Coroner Arnold.

Alfred Rattle spoke for corporate stock ownership in other corporations while Theodore L. Stiles defended the negative. Officers were re-elected. Lawyer's Day observed with delegates attending the races.

The Pacific Coast Association of Traffic Agents of Oregon and Washington gathers in Portland with 75 members attending. They board the Dix at Al-Ki Point for a picnic then tour the city by electric cars to Ballard and Fremont before a 6 pm banquet at the Washington and a moonlight cruise on the sound aboard the Nome liner Olympia.
