Portland July 7. Forest fires blamed on carelessness and dry season. Campfires and slashings left burning sparked dozens of blazes across logged land. Lumbermen cite lack of air patrols and urge plane patrols to deter fires and protect valuable timber.
Mrs. Helen Rand, an early woman suffrage worker and friend of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, died at 72 in Boone Maryland. Coun cilman Philip Tindall received the news Friday after visiting her last month. Surviving relative in Seattle is Lloyd Tindall, publisher of The Wireless.
Autoist Ed Beeler attempted to beat a train at a grade crossing in Richmond California. Miss Ruby Beeler and Miss Margie Adams died along with an unidentified girl. Beeler was injured internally.
In Chicago on July 7 women linked to strikers led a mob of about 1000 through Burnside and other rail shop areas. They attacked homes of workers and fought with stones and curses while picketing shop centers. Police and state troops prepared to quell riots as the strike widens.
Nine members of a Seattle picnic party were rescued when their overloaded canoe capsized on Lake Stevens Friday. W. T. Knowles, a lumberman, saved the group after the three swimmers struggled to stay afloat as the duck boat responders arrived.
Berlin reports indicate the Wirth government will seek a moratorium on monthly reparations payments as the mark collapses to 2,180 to a pound. Officials warn the republic faces financial ruin with widespread uncertainty and rumors spreading in the capital.
