Fourth of July at Puget Sound 1841 Picnic
In July 1841 near Smith's Cove and Alki Point the Nisqually camp, led by Captain Wilkes with 100 sailors 60 missionaries and 400 Indians, celebrated the first Puget Sound Fourth of July. A barbecue ox hung over a sapling fired cannons and a humorous horse race ended with sailors toppled over. The day left the Americans dreaming of cities along the coast, and American Lake later earned its name.
