Albert Willis and other Valencia survivors describe a chaotic evacuation with few orders from officers, boats lost gear, and attempts to reach shore hampered by cliffs and underbrush. They accuse Topeka and Queen of the Pacific of abandoning survivors while sea conditions remained calm.
Victoria B C January reports the steamer Salvor left Bamfield with F F Bunker bound for Victoria and expected morning arrival. A Bamfield crew of Indians from the Bahada tried to land near the wreck but refused due to high seas. A white crew in a dory failed to pass an outer reef, prompting a new plan to land with Clo-Oose Indians and a Bahada voyage to Clo-Oose.
In St Paul Minnesota E E Clark of the Brotherhood of Railway Conductors seeks to avert a threatened strike affecting four thousand workers on the Great Northern and Union Pacific railroads after wage negotiations broke down. A $1,000 reward is offered for the recovery of Raymond West of Beattie a Stanford athlete drowned in the Eel river California ten days ago. The father has reached Covelo and adds the sum to $100 from the Eel River Power company where West was employed.

A collision between Great Northern Orientail Limited trains Nos. 1 and 2 west of Columbia Falls Montana at 10 40 last night killed Fireman William Lindsey and O H Harrison and Express Messenger B O Wurzbacher. Engineers H O Barden and W T Thierwichter and Conductor C O Quinn of No 2 were seriously injured. Four or five passengers were slightly injured. Conductor Quinn allegedly did not obey orders to side track at Half Moon.
A city council panel in Tacoma held a secret executive session to hear evidence on graft. The public protested as the meeting went behind closed doors while witnesses debated testifying. An alleged surveillance of a paving contractor's office fed claims of hidden testimony and improprieties.
The railroad will build roads from Cape Beale to San Juan and run a wireless equipped boat between Bamfield and Beale, effective February 1.
