Governor McBride declares opposition to the Hill-Morgan railroad combine and calls for a railroad commission to fix rates and curb unfair practices. He argues competition has ceased, urges bipartisan regulatory power, and warns against the influence of railroad lobbyists on state politics.
In Chicago on January 4, officials chaired by Knapp opened hearings into the community of interest plan behind a railroad merger. Witnesses including Darius Miller and J C Stubbs gave evasive replies about collusion and rate agreements, with Miller admitting limited knowledge of the merger details.
At 2 o'clock this afternoon the old steamer ER L Smith broke from Coleman pier and collided with the Greyhound. The Greyhound, with a damaged bow, swung loose and drifted toward the bay amid a 0- mile gale, raising fear of total wreck. Capt M C Jensen led a fire-boat pursuit from the harbor. The Smith then swung back into the slip.
Charles Iddings faced a superior court trial for assault with intent to murder Thorng Haggart, a crippled man living near Kent. The incident followed a dispute over a line fence on December 21, with Iddings allegedly breaking a shotgun and injuring Haggart, who was found the next day badly beaten with scalp wounds and broken ribs.
Edward Forster of the Seattle Bridge Co. was struck by an electric car at Main Street and Occidental Avenue. He was taken to the police station and treated by Dr. Bortes for a severe forehead bruise, the apparent injury.
The city council met as a committee of the whole to fix a schedule for Seattle Electric Company lines but adjourned without action due to lack of a quorum. A prepared report awaits submission to Seattle Electric. Meeting may resume next week as members seek to settle the matter. no Seattle Electric officials attended.

Vienna dispatch reports an anarchist attempted to stab King George while he walked in a Phaleron park. A park inspector with the king restrained the attacker until police arrested him. the king remained unharmed.
Reports from Willemstad say France may dispatch two warships from Fort de France to protest Venezuela over a land dispute. The issue centers on Mona Secrestat's denied landing and alleged land deals tied to revolutionary Matos, with Secrestat appealing to France for support.
Joseph Pedro of Napa was found dead on a San Francisco street early this morning with a bullet hole through his kidneys. Police believe he was the victim of footpads. This is the second murder in a week. Pedro was later identified as being shot at by Officer Cranchton. he began to run when told to halt and was ordered to stop.
In Indianapolis on January 2 the United Mineral convention re elected President Mitchell and Secretary Wilson and the old executive board. Elections were unanimous and followed with enthusiasm as charges against officers were repudiated.
A cablegram read to Speaker Henderson requests U S aid for Cuban American interests, citing about 90 million dollars in Cuban needs and possible reciprocity gains. Secretary Hay signs Denmark US treaty transferring the Danish West Indies, pending Senate ratification. Democrats plan a caucus to debate party platform formulation.
At 10 30 last night three masked men entered Drane and Manford’s saloon in Renton and, at the point of a revolver, robbed the cash register of about $74 in silver and checks. They seized two revolvers from behind the bar and fled before an alarm could be raised. Three bystanders were present. Two deputy sheriffs are investigating the case in Renton.
The Umatilla reached the port this morning carrying 900 tons of freight and 40 passengers after an hour in the stream. Officers say the voyage was pleasant until 8 o'clock when the storm hit. The Queen sailed for San Francisco at 9 o'clock with a large cargo and 40 passengers.
