Patrick Tierney, half frozen after wandering streets all night, admits to killing his wife Marjorie Meefian Tierney and their three year old son. He says poverty and hunger drove him to buy a hatchet with 80 cents and commit the murders. He demanded lodging at police headquarters and later spoke of wanting poison and death.
Capt. P. F. Meehan of San Francisco learned of his daughter Mrs. Marjory Tierney's murder in Chicago. He recalled Marjory had left with her husband Paul Tierney last November after a separation, then reunited and planned to live together again. Tierney, a former war chemist stationed at the San Francisco presidio, married Marjory in 1918. his father was a New York police sergeant.
Private cables report the U S Steamer West Phopaka from San Francisco arrived at Shanghai damaged in a sea collision. The cable gave no detail on the extent of damage or the other vessel involved.
