News received of the schooner Lakme drifting helplessly between Humboldt Bay and San Francisco. The Lakme was towed from the bay by the steamer North Fork, but they parted in a storm and the North Fork could not recover the tow. A tug has departed San Francisco to search for the Lakme.
In Selabings Moravia fifteen children fell through ice on a pond while skating and drowned. Barbara Harrison recently convicted of assault with intent to do bodily harm has been moved from the county jail to the county hospital under guard due to a painful arm abscess. The YWCA begins its children’s cooking course with the first lesson Saturday January 7 at 8 30 am.
The Star claims the water fund is over $600,000 short as comptroller Riplinger presents a balance showing diversions from the water fund to the general fund since 1893. He argues that previous administrations diverted sizable sums beyond the authorized 52,500 yearly transfer, leaving the water fund indebted to the general fund and prompting a politically charged dispute between small taxpayers and land monopolists in city council.
At Everett on January 5 the State Federation of Labor debated Organizer Young’s Spokane origin and reportedly heated accusations. Cullen opposed the report calling Young a chrome diaturber, and Young retorted about plans to combat him with rival organizing funds. The report was accepted by eight votes against from Seattle and Spokane. Later Delegate Harmon from Beattie accused the executive committee of negligence for not pursuing legislation from the last session.
President Blackman defended the committee while C R Case argued Harmon was trying to cripple it and breaking into print too often. The federation settled the matter by adopting a motion commending the committee and urging more careful conduct in the future.
The jury in the state case against Mrs Thompson retired at 2 30 pm after two days of court attention. A verdict was expected later today. A burglar meanwhile carried out a daylight break in at Fifth Avenue and Cedar Street, entering the home above Cedar Street Grocery.

Report from Manila dated January 5 notes a Japanese cruiser patrolling the San Maenten straits and approaching Manila harbor at 2 p m January 6. The cruiser signalled intent to enter and was answered with a negative and declined to state further plans.
A Beattie incident describes John Young being robbed after an encounter with strangers. He lost $4.50 and a pair of shoes at Summit house. Wan reported the case to police. Police note several similar reports as a recurring issue tied to the nipper mari.

ST. PETERSBURG Jan 5 high authority states no decision made on whether the squadron will return to European waters. The report notes the disarmament of seven Russian destroyers completed to the satisfaction of Japan. Continued on Page Seven.
First Officer Rouse, in charge of the steamer Tacoma when she grounded on a sand bar off West Point, has been discharged by Northwestern Steamship Co. Port Captain Willy announced the dismissal, citing carelessness on duty. Captain Connauton seeks a new first officer as the Tacoma prepares to sail for the Orient tomorrow.
In South Bend on January 5 D W Swan died after a fall caused by a punch from Vincent Duckwitz during a dispute at Chris Kuhner's saloon. Duckwitz surrendered to the sheriff and is under guard.
The chamber of commerce resolution opposing funding for sending City Engineer Thomson to Europe was tabled after L M Wood and others argued for it. President Schram praised Thomson’s city service, while EF Shorrock cited corporate trips and worldwide garbage disposal lessons as context for the discussion.
