A disastrous White River flood killed Martin Cummings and farm hand Edward Shaughnessy near O'Brien after dark Saturday. A third man survived. widespread damage followed, with washed tracks, destroyed fences, and livestock losses across King County, Auburn, and surrounding areas.
Seattle street car service is severely reduced as White River floods halt Interurban Renton line and Columbia & Puget Sound railroad. Coal supply from Renton mines dwindles. Superintendent Kempster warns service may be cut further. Black Diamond and Pacific Coast coal interests report disrupted shipments but Columbia & Puget Sound anticipates averting a coal famine.
Coroner Hoye notified at 9 30 this morn and left for O’Brien. Cummings, from a White River valley farm near Brien, leaves a large family. Floodwaters rise, boats lacking hinder escape. relief trains and rescue crews mobilized to aid O’Brien and Kent areas.
A committee appointed by Bremerton Chamber of Commerce travels to investigate disputes between Bremerton and Navy Yard officials. It will hear official statements, seek assurances from authorities, and may push for formal representations to Navy War Department. A proposed Ballinger bill would ban liquor sales within a mile of naval reservations, with penalties up to a year in prison.
George N Bakebury section director in charge of local weather says floods are likely in river valleys south of the city for several days. Heavy snowfall high mountains caused freshets as warm rains melt snow. High temperatures and continued melting mean freshets will persist for days with only a slight dip yesterday.
Three columns of rebels are within eight miles of Caracas as telegraph lines and railways to La Guayra are destroyed. The panel is tasked to uncover past and present abuses, including lewd activities, with attention to a $46,000 county treasury shortage case and corrections in prison and public offices.
King county lawmakers show discomfort as Ankeny backers push against the railroad commission. Preston supporters rally in the senate while petition drives seek to bind King county delegates to oppose the commission and back Preston for US Senate.
