Authorities hunt three masked robbers who held up a Tacoma Seattle interurban, killing three on the first Great Northern train near Bellingham and stealing about $500 on the second. A large reward remains unclaimed as deputies close in on suspects believed sheltered around Seattle.
The Star argues Gillism exposed as a scare tactic by special interests backing Trenholme. It cites red light abatement laws, courthouse actions, and past shifts in support, asserting labor and reform groups rally for Gill while bosses push Trenholme to regain control.
In Bellingham on February 23, a large force of armed men combs the woods for two bandits who held up a Great Northern train at Samish Friday night and killed three passengers. Water patrols from Whatcom and Skagit counties search for the fugitives by boat. George Joyce, jailed on return to the city, is not yet identified as one of the Joyce brothers. Conductor Waldron arrived but could not confirm Joyce’s involvement or explain his absence since Thursday.
Gustav Bauch, an American, was found imprisoned in Chihuahua City awaiting trial as a spy and likely to face execution. Bauch, a German-American, had recently disappeared from Juarez, raising alarm in Washington. Entangled diplomatic tensions over Mexico and potential intervention, plus a report of German and British naval guards near Mexico City, dominated official chatter as the crisis deepened.
Michael Haltech a wealthy Clevelander believed kidnaped from Los Angeles is in a coma at the county hospital after wandering into a police station. His sister Mrs. Martha Kunech of New Kensington Pa. travels to California following a telegram claiming ransom. Funeral services for Capt. Cal Weldon Spanish war veteran held at the Armory.
