A National Guard and Army after action critique runs through the plea for a congressional inquiry into Pershing and army management in France. Veterans, officers, and guardsmen argue regular army favoritism, removal of Guard leaders, and missteps in planning and offensive orders near Verdun, with calls for accountability and transparency.
Major General Peter Traub, commander of the 35th division, told the House Rules Committee that charges of mishandling at the Argonne are unfounded. Philadelphia February 20 1947 about 26000 workers were sent home as 400 foremen struck for higher wages from 60 to 67 a week at Hog Island shipyard.
London February 20 A spirited debate was expected in the house of lords this afternoon over the allied position in Northern Russia stirred by Lord Lanadowne’s question on steps taken to insure the safety of allied troops.
Federal officials distribute income tax blanks for incomes to 4000 dollars at the post office building. Other blanks for higher incomes will be available soon. All single persons earning over 1000 dollars in 1918 must file and pay the tax, with heavy penalties for failure.
President Wilson on the U S George Washington conveys condolence and relief over Premier Clemenceau’s escape from an attack in Paris. He expresses heartfelt sympathy and joy at his escape and hopes reports of slight injuries are true. Secretary Lansing and the American Mission in Paris relay the message.
Edna Goodrich, fourth wife of the late Nat Goodwin, announces a contest over his estate valued around 500000. She claims a 1908 will naming her, while earlier estimates placed the estate at 5000 to 6000, with property in California and the West.

In Chicago, Feb 20, Victor Berger congressman elect and four other socialists were found guilty of conspiring under the espionage act. Berger, defending socialism, argued the trial targeted the socialist movement and claimed the verdict stemmed from political motives rather than crime. The defendants included J Louis Kruse Irwin St John Tucker and Aleph.
The jury found Professor Scott Nearing not guilty on two counts related to violating the espionage act. The trial also involved co defendant the American Socialist party linked to Nearing's pamphlet Great Madness.
