Woman deputy commissioner cuts live and let live markets prices
Mrs Louis Reed Weltmil ler, New York deputy commissioner of markets, created a chain of live and let live markets cutting living costs by about 60 percent. She enforces fair price lists weekly and uses licenses to police profiteers. Her program expanded from wartime emergency food work to managing large market houses and 60 000 dealers. Potatoes sell at 12 pounds for 26 cents in her markets versus six pounds for 3 1/2 cents elsewhere.
