Wealth and marriages mark era of White House society
The article records elaborate weddings and social events in Washington circles, noting brides connected to prominent figures such as President Roosevelt and the Longworth family. It highlights lavish costumes, costly decorations, and the prominence of aristocratic connections in late 19th century society. The piece also discusses portraits of opportunity for heirs like Nicholas Longworth and Alice Roosevelt Longworth as they navigate wealth, status, and political ties.
Eloped to Washington as a Notable’s Groom in Early Political Life
The narrative details a Cincinnati born bachelor who eloped with a neighborhood girl after securing a marriage license. They entered the White House with a preacher and were admitted to a state apartment, while a colored attendant facilitated their covert meeting. The piece traces the groom’s rise from Ohio bar admission in 1894 through local and state offices to Congress, noting influential figures and laws bearing his name. It also contrasts the public adulation of Alice Roosevelt with lesser-known American girls.
