Eighteen workers and ten firemen were injured in a double blast at a Brooklyn sulphur works plant. A police officer was overcome by fumes during firefighting, and several men jumped from the burning building. The fire caused extensive damage estimated at about 30060 dollars with two workers not expected to live.
Washington announces Roosevelt orders inquiry by the bureau of labor and the department into Standard Oil Company activities in Kansas. The action, prompted by concerns over the Foster lease on Osage lands, aims to trace practices across Kansas oil fields and other producing regions. Passed by the house today the Mann canal zone government bill abolishes the current commission and grants the president authority to appoint any needed aides. It also authorizes the purchase of bonds of the Panama railroad.
Senator A. T. Van de Vanter remains critically ill with a fever between 103 and 104 degrees since last night. Dr. Carroll has not reduced the temperature and a turn for better or worse was expected to occur tonight. Mrs. Van de Vanter, distressed but hopeful, notes the senator’s noted vitality and iron will as the family clings to hope.
