Government investigators opened the trial of Capt. Berry of the steamer Nantucket in Philadelphia on negligence charges connected to the Monroe liner disaster near Norfolk which cost nearly fifty lives.
Hans Schmidt, convicted of murdering Anna Aumuller and dismembering her body, was sentenced to die in the electric chair during the week of March 23. Justice Vernon Davis imposed the sentence at the state supreme court criminal branch. Schmidt showed no emotion as he heard the ruling and was moved to Sing Sing to await execution.
