The Star argues the city faces a broad showdown as a segment of the community contemplates defying government and seizing control. It frames the strike as an acid test of citizenship and the nation's values, urging Seattle men and women to choose their stand.
Street car workers vote for a general strike 676 to 578 with two thirds needed for a sympathy walkout. Mayor Hanson and J D Ross call for volunteers to run the city power plant and fire alarms to avoid disaster. Timber, ship and other unions join the planned walkout threatening gas and telephones as officials seek a settlement before midnight.
The Metal Trades council issue a pre strike leaflet as a last minute appeal to unite striking shipyard workers. The document asserts labor can self provide essentials and criticizes capitalist control while declaring readiness to win. City department note warns employees to keep operations running and cites penalties for insubordination.
The mayor declares normal city functions will continue with city hall as the seat of government. Municipal services will run, schools open, and elected officials will deputize up to 10,000 citizens or more to maintain law and order.
Leon Green, business agent of the electrical workers union, is labeled an alien by Mayor Hanson amid a strike that shuts down city light and fire alarm services. The mayor warns Seattle’s safety risks without volunteers to run the electric system and fire alert signals.
Progressive senators plan speaking tours after March 4 to promote measures to please the people and curb Bolshevist propaganda. Senators Borah Johnson Kenyon and Poindexter likely to campaign. Korah says people may act freely with their government without violence while retaining the ballot. The platform calls for return of American soldiers and removal of repressive speech and press limits. The armistice period total American forces in Europe and Siberia is 2,015,089.
D. F. Skinner, head of Skinner Eddy, states the average pay of his workers was 9.12 dollars per day. He notes wages in shipyards at the time of the strike. in Skinner & Eddy's yard, 11,778 daily-rate workers averaged 5.72 dollars per day for eight hours.
The transport Duc d Aosta arriving in New York on February 5 brought 1 776 American troops from Marseille and Gibraltar. The voyage included 60 officers and 1 228 men of the 331st field artillery to Camp Grant, 6 officers and 205 men of Battery E 339th field artillery to Camp Dodge, 6 officers and 71 men of headquarters company and 10 men of the medical detachment, plus 14 men from the 43d artillery and 122 casuals.
Lawrence Mass February 5 I W W agents arrived to organize striking textile workers. The strikers committee repudiates the American Federation of Labor and the local Textile Workers unions but has not joined the I W W.
Oakland workers in the East Bay outside shops will meet to decide on ending the strike and returning to work tomorrow morning. The unions issued the statement today.
Bremerton February 5. The Metal Trades council announces that unless a national strike occurs the navy yard workers will continue their work at the yard.
In Tacoma a Central Labor Council vote tonight could bind unions to a general walkout, raising the threat of a breach if those opposed refuse to support the strike. Smelter workers about 4,000 strong voted against participation. cereal and flour workers also rejected the proposal.
London February 5 The ministry of labor will intervene in the strikes spreading through Great Britain and Ireland if union officials fail to gain control. The government says the labor row is a fight between regular leaders and rebels and will act to protect society.
In Columbus Georgia February 5 approximately seven thousand textile workers say they are locked out after mill owners refuse to grant an hour day without wage increases. Only two of fourteen mills were operating and those were on a limited scale with unorganized labor.
William J. Flynn former head of the U S secret service is expected to be among the first witnesses when the Senate opens its inquiry into Bolshevik propaganda in the United States.
J. D. Ross, superintendent of the city light department, urges volunteers from linemen, engineers, station operators and firemen to keep the city light plant operating during a general strike. He warns that without power, West Seattle pumps fail, hospitals rely on city light, and many city functions stop. Volunteers expected at 10 am tomorrow at the city department office, second floor, county building.
