Liner Iowa Sunk on Lake Michigan Off Chicago River

The 646 ton steamship Iowa of the Goodrich line sank in Lake Michigan at 10 20 a m three miles off the Chicago river mouth. Crew of 75 men reached land over ice floes after a failure of hull integrity blamed on ice. Wireless reports from Chicago carried the news with scant details from Capt Sturrlebean. Wheat opened May at 1 60 and July at 1 38 1 2 with early gains to 1 62 1 2 and 1 40 1 2 respectively.

Protests Reach State Dept Over British Food Seizure Policy

Washington notes mass protests against Britain’s announced policy to confiscate food aboard alien ships bound for Germany Austria or Turkey. The Wilhelmina sailed from New York to Bremen with food claimed for German civilians and may be seized with payment at market prices. The United States has not yet taken a position on the British plan.

New York Woman Ida Walters Rogers Faces Trial

Ida Walters Rogers, a New York woman, stands trial for killing her two babies by bichloride of mercury. After attempting suicide, she lingered between life and death at Lebanon Hospital but is recovering. If Bronx County DA proceeds, she faces the electric chair. Continues on Page Seven.

Sterilization bill killed in Olympia debate

The stricter of two sterilization bills, No. 23, was defeated 52 to 40 in the house. The heated debate led to women in the gallery being asked to leave. An extreme substitute proposed burning those targeted at stake, while others favored mob action. The bill targeted individuals convicted of certain sex crimes and differed from the other bill in covered offenses and methods.

Widow demands autopsy on Cooper case

Pierce county coroner F J Stewart ruled against autopsy concerns in Edward C Cooper death at Steflacoom insane asylum. The Tacoma message says Stewart found no foul play and the widow, Mrs. Cooper, requested an autopsy to verify facts. Stewart cited neck marks from shaving and a black eye as non suspicious. Mr and Mrs Daly of Wenatchee reconciled in Los Angeles after two years apart.
