A woodworker named Se lace Dyal, about 18 miles from Waycross, was killed by a mob of African American men who fought among themselves. Before dying he shot and killed two of the attackers, who resented his interference.
Governor Toole pardons John Caddick who was sentenced to life in the penitentiary after killing his partner at a Deer Lodge County dance in 1896 while intoxicated. He must sign the pledge as a condition of the clemency.
Jon B. Owen, 19, was arrested in Oshkosh Wisconsin on December 25 for allegedly attempting to poison the entire family of his employer, Richard Owens of Algoma by putting poison in a teapot. He has been adjudged insane. The substance used in the plan resembled liniment and was detectable by its odor.
Charles Starr was acquitted of the murder of Wayne Newburgh in district court last night. The verdict came as Christmas bells rang and Starr wished the jury a merry Christmas. The defendant was accused of killing Newburgh in a boxcar near Huntley on August 31 of this year.
United Press reports Pittsburg industrialist Corey Ellis and his wife Marelle Gilman face speculation he resents his gilded marriage. Close associates note strain between business life and social circles while hints point to longing for his first wife and 20-year-old son Alan.
Milwaukee report says Sister Theresa, a nurse at St. Mary’s hospital, was shot by Gustav Wirth, believed insane. Wirth, who had surgery at the hospital a year earlier, fired four shots upon visiting the nurse, killing her within minutes after a chase spanning blocks. He claimed hospital officials tried to poison him.
In Henrietta Oklahoma James Garden, a black man, was found hanged from a telegraph pole after fatally shooting Arthur Bates, a white liveryman who refused to rent him a rig. The incident marks the first lynching in the new state.
The second of the marked rats turned bone by the federal sanitation department was captured yesterday afternoon within about a block of its release point, more than a week after it was set free. The first rat was caught on Pikest Street, about a mile from its release location.
Edward J. Donton a clerk at the Grand Central hotel postal substation is jailed after postal inspectors charge him with stealing packages. He allegedly readdressed several parcels to a young woman in Newark, including one containing a pair of bright red stockings. Inspectors say Donton confessed.
Amon Hiley Mardin, famed Bohemian club member, was arrested in San Francisco on a Nevada fencing indictment. Deputy Towle served a warrant sworn by AUSA Black after a federal grand jury in Carson City found cause. The charges allege barbed wire fencing of public lands without reporting to the land office.

A sudden cold snap at the head waters of the Allegheny river keeps flood danger from rising past warning levels. Forecasters predicted the danger point at 22 feet by Christmas morning and said it could be surpassed by a few inches.

Mrs. William McKell Hughes, widow of Earl 8 Beer, tells reporters at the Hotel Holland she carries a revolver and will use it at sight of her father in law Earl Heer or any accused agents. She says Walker was justified in killing Beer and testified at his trial where he was acquitted. The couple, on their honeymoon, fear threats from Heer and his backers.
