Mystery surrounds murder of wealthy Los Angeles woman

Wealthy businesswoman Mrs Fay Sudow found dead in a citrus grove near Los Angeles. Investigators seek the killer who mutilated her, with detectives and the former husband Bern Budow unable to answer. Sudow, a thrifty real estate and art collector valued at about 200000, lived frugally in dingy rooms and kept her address hidden. Her 16 year old daughter was kept at a ranch and visited only infrequently. A mystery woman bought gifts for the daughter, and Sudow had been divorced and met a man she later quarreled with before meeting again to discuss a home site. A meeting on December 6 preceded her death, with many details still unknown. Clues include a red Elgin touring car California plate 1071. A separate note reports a clothesline thief stealing stockings and scarves on Spring Street.
