A house fire in Philadelphia destroys the Smith residence killing a mother and her two children aged 12 and 4. Mrs Smith’s neighbor, a policeman’s wife, died later from injuries she suffered while attempting to rescue them. The blaze also fatally burned Mr and Mrs Nehans in a separate early morning fire. cause unknown.
William Hoyt, accused of a July robbery at Mrs. Stetson's home in which $89 was taken and the victim locked in a room for hours, has been arrested in San Francisco. Detectives Harbee and Tennant traced him to the city and coordinated the arrest. The Stetsons, including G. W. Stetson and his wife, were connected to the case.
Hoyt learned Mrs. Stetson had 80 in her trunk and broke in stealing the cash. He locked Mrs. Stetson in her room and forced his wife to accompany him at gunpoint. The couple fled to Portland where Mrs. Hoyt later left him to support his gambling. She returned to her father in Madteon and Hoyt's San Francisco letters triggered arrest.
The chamber of commerce committee on dredging the Duwamish River reported favorably and the chamber adopted the plan at its meeting. The goal is deeper water to aid flow districts and provide river frontage for the city with a view to securing congressional aid.
A thief entered the Pacific Barbers Supply Co store on Tl Jefferson street Tuesday night and stole goods valued at 222 dollars. One partner suspects a firm associate. John McCaully and George Clarke were arrested yesterday on a petty larceny warrant and alleged to have stolen carpenters tools from a neighbor. tools found cached at the McCaulay residence.
United States consul W. R. Davis at Alexandretia in Turkey reportedly faced an attack by Turkish police, lowered the consulate flag, and left for Beirut after the arrest of Armenian American Channel Attarian. Davis, appointed July 21, 1809, from Irondale Ohio, was a former schoolteacher. He is under investigation by Minister Leichman in relation to the affair with the porte.
Special to The Star. Gus Hanauer father of Russell Hanauer of Seattle died of apoplexy in Spokane yesterday morning. He collapsed suddenly in the arms of a friend, gasped and died within minutes.
The report accuses Perry Heath and George W. Beavers of primary responsibility for abuses in the Post Office Department. It implies the late Postmaster General Emory Smith and others tolerated improper expenditures. A sweeping investigation and commission are urged to reform the department and curb irregularities.
John Mongell of 4 Columbia Street was robbed at 10 45 pm by two masked youths on Seventh Avenue between Spring and Beneca streets. Frank Stewart Wright a six month old infant son of Mr and Mrs John E K Wright residing on Broadway was found dead in his crib early this morning by his mother. The cause of death is unknown and an autopsy will be performed by Coroner Hoye at the Bionney-Watson morgue to determine the cause. The father is a machinist with the Columbia Puget Sound Railroad Company.
A freight collision on the Seattle & International branch of the Northern Pacific after a landslide at mile post 11 near Lake Washington killed brakeman Joseph Manning, who was unmarried and had three years with the company. The engineer and fireman escaped as the wrecking crew and physicians rushed to the scene.
Olympia December 17. The supreme court ruled the logging company may not condemn rights of way for logging roads shoots or streams through land owned by Bhamgar Morris. The decision declares the law granting such power unconstitutional.
Members of the University of Washington football team met late yesterday and elected Fred Meckimen captain for next year by unanimous vote. Star end William Hill withdrew before the vote allowing Meckimen to win the office in a clear single choice.
