Jimmy Legs and the Old Navy Fades From Sea to Shore
An aging naval view laments the departure of the old time bluejackets led by the legendary Jimmy Legs. The piece contrasts veteran sailors who knew every inch of their ships with modern crews and rapid modernization including cyber navigation, central control, and electric potato peeling aboard ships. The author recalls his Pacific fleet voyage seeking Jimmy Legs to learn, finding instead a landward crew changed by new technology and younger adventurers.
