A bitter cold front sweeps toward Chicago and the Midwest with subfreezing highs and strong winds. Reports from Minnesota, the Dakotas, Colorado and California describe freezing temperatures, livestock losses, travel disruption, and warnings of further frost and danger to mariners and citrus growers.
The Fane Civil Service League met in Boston with papers by advocates praising Roosevelt's civil service policy. An unanimous vote was taken to support him as the convention adjourned.
Luigt Stortz the first man to be electrocuted in Massachusetts heads to the chair early Monday for the death of a fellow Italian. The case marks a historic execution in the state.

The vessel STR. CHAS. NELSON from Skagway carried fifty-one Chinese and twenty nine Japanese workers plus ten white passengers. The steamer, docked at an unnamed port, had cargo of canned salmon and concentrates. It departed Jun and called at Sitka Bay Island and Pee, completing the run in exactly three days under excellent weather with no incidents.
George Simmons of San Francisco, a fur dealer, arrived by the Dolphin from Alaska and condemns large scale deer slaughter on Prince of Wales Island. He seeks a congressional bill to restrict export of Alaska deer skins, citing Governor Brady’s support and industry backers. He notes winter slaughter reduces value by two thirds and aims to protect future prices.
Joseph La Plaine was hanged in Montreal today for murdering his landlady Mme Lefeever after she jilted him. He required support to reach the scaffold as the case was called one of the era’s most noted crimes in this region.
Fairhaven officials announce a large paper mill will be built soon, one of the region’s largest and most complete facilities. It will produce all grades of paper and boost local industry.
The state convention of the Y M C A is in session in Everett and opened formally this morning. It will run three days with a banquet this afternoon at the Methodist church hosted by ladies of local churches. Mayor Greene gave a brief welcome.
A federal law banning employment agencies from charging sailors for shipboard positions is upheld after Frank Crawford of Main Street was indicted for taking one dollar to place a sailor. He pleaded guilty and was fined. The sailors union staged the test to prove the statute valid, warning agencies to stop fees.
President Roosevelt opened the Woodmen of the World convention in Spokane by activating a telegraph key at the White House to turn on the lights in the convention hall. He then sent a message of congratulations and good will to attendees.
Buenos Aires reports a Valeparaiso conference between Yanex and Portela to settle roads disputes in disputed territory. Henry Lavilee of Taunton and Miss Martha Goyette of Blackstone wed at St. Pauls church in Blackstone. Lavilee aged 41 stands 3 feet 6% inches tall and weighs 75 pounds. his bride is 21, 8 feet inches tall and weighs 93 pounds. Lavilee is a known Taunton businessman owning a block and running three stores.
Wood general superintendent of Great Northern and Clark general traffic manager with Cole are in the city at the Butler on a tour of inspection of the north west system.
Washington ordered the Bear and Mc Culloch to search the northwestern coast from San Francisco for the missing collier Matteawan. They will cruise toward Vancouver Island if needed. San Francisco reports several steamers ordered to take special routes to locate Matteawan or obtain news.
Victoria dispatches report Nanaimo shipping men anxious over the Mattea wan. The captain, when asked if overloaded, said the vessel could carry more. The discovery of wreckage including the medicine chest confirms the loss.
The lighthouse tender Manzanita departed Seattle for Destruction Island to reach shipwrecked sailors believed to be part of the Matteawan crew. Sightings were reported as the vessel passed the area but heavy seas hindered aid. The crew pledged to rescue ten men on arrival near Astoria tomorrow.
Kid West leaves the Klondike under escort as British Yukon officials deny him a place. Previously taken to Dawson to testify against George O'Brien, he was pardoned by Gov. Rogers for that service. He returns to Dawson, but the locals shun him, and British authorities hand him back to the United States.
M Humes sent a letter to request information about his son Clarence H. Johnston last seen with W Meade. Clarence is described as tall about 6 feet 4 inches with brown eyes and dark complexion. The note was forwarded to Chief of Police Sullivan by the mayor.
Miss Belle Bray of Heath Nebraska marries her cousin T J Bray after a 66 mile overnight ride on a single horse. The couple fled to Cheyenne while her father and ranch hands pursued, leaving Mrs Bray Jr to establish a home in a five room flat.
City council votes to lay on the table indefinitely resolutions to abolish civil service and amend the city charter. Proponents cite petitions while opponents uphold civil service. health board personnel change is also debated amid procedural votes.
Water Superintendent L B Youngs said trouble comes from residents leaving yard taps open and water running onto sidewalks where it freezes and slicks walks. He warned that ongoing waste will lead to shutoffs and urged residents to stop the practice.

Quincy Lee Morrow, noted prohibition advocate, will address audiences at the First Methodist Protestant church next Saturday evening and Sunday at 3 o clock. He arrives in the city after visits to Port Townsend and Tacoma and will lecture without charge.
The first indoor meet of the season starts at 3 o clock in the university armory. Events include the 20 yard dash, running high jump, one mile, and 16 pound shot put. Thirty men enter the dash, fourteen the jumps, twelve the shot put, and twelve the mile. Competitors include Fred Chestnut Tick Huntoon Alex Gardner Will Hil Frank Pields and the Pearson brothers.
McElmon for Captain Fred Meimon will be elected captain at next Monday's meeting. McElmon is a 145 pound varsity player from What com and a member of the class of 1904.
W C Stage petitions the superior court for divorce claiming a 16 year marriage to Julia L ended in January 1894 when she refused further contact after a quarrel. He says attempts at reconciliation failed and seeks relief to feel better.
A son was born to Mr and Mrs Clyde Wright at Saybrook Ohio. The infant has two grandfathers and two grandmothers along with several generations of grandparents extending to a great great grandfather and great great grandmother.
In Scranton a bid to raise the executive from six to eleven members failed amid heated debate over expediency. The conference also tackled the South’s Negro question in relation to unionism. a proposal to admit Negro labor organizations was defeated to avoid regional disruption. Resolutions urged enforcement of the eight hour law in private shipyards and investigations before boycotts.

A scheduled entertainer Jim Mc and Kid Kennard failed to appear last night. The crowd waited about two hours before dispersing after McDonald did not show.
Major Rubien opened bids yesterday afternoon for 100 tons of hay and 3600 tons of oats. Eleven bids were received with samples. Competitors included Beattie Spokane and Ta coma share, while Grak Seattle or Tacoma also participated.
Six year old George Frm fell twenty two feet yesterday afternoon from a new court wing. He was picked up by Kid Parker a tall trusty and he was coughed up bread before becoming unconscious for hours. Doctors fear internal injuries and serious harm.
Andrew Z Erickson faced superior court for selling adulterated milk on August 21 in Beattie. City milk inspector Woodcock, chemist Turner, and State Food Inspector McDonald testified as evidence. The case noted two wagons, one carrying pure milk and the other containing the adulterated supply, with Erickson denying involvement.
Health Officer Carroll will draft a resolution to authorize a crematory for garbage disposal. The board discussed the proposal at length and suggested the action. Dr Carroll will present the resolution next Monday night. Estimated cost of the crematory is about $15 000.
A small blaze broke out shortly before 6 o clock in a shack at the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street. The Seattle fire department responded quickly and damage remained minor.
