The British freighter Orterie, Capt. Harper, grounded on Fish Rock about 75 miles north of San Francisco and was breaking apart. About 25 crew members were rescued as the Cotton Plant located the scene, but the white crew remained aboard as heavy seas hindered lifeboat launches and daylight inspection labeled the ship hopeless.
John Wanamaker founder of the Philadelphia stores and former postmaster general died at his home after a brief illness. He was born July 11, 1838, in Philadelphia and left a legacy as a merchant prince and civic figure. He had been ill for about two weeks and died peacefully after a relapse.
Hearings in the Daugherty impeachment probe began before the judiciary committee. Paul Howland, representing Attorney General Daugherty, demanded disclosure of who aided in preparing the charges and who the unnamed persons behind Representative Keller are.
Democratic leaders and republican insurgents say the ship subsidy measure will be replaced by farm relief legislation within a week. A senate poll indicates about 50 votes favor displacing the shipping bill with farm credits legislation.

O K Davis secretary of the National Foreign Trade council tours Seattle to recruit members for foreign trade expansion. He speaks to Seattle 3 then heads to Tacoma to address Northwest Foreign Trade council, outlining foreign trade as a profitable 10 percent share and urging broader industry involvement for U S prosperity. Prominent Pacific coast council members named include H F Alexander and Captain Robert Dollar.
Majority Leader Mondell announced the apportionment bill will be moved after Congress reconvenes. The plan, based on 400 members, adds 25 seats and grants one ex tra congressman for Washington and four for California. The measure has lingered since the 1920 census and now seems assured of passage.
In Montana and Yakima, tensions rise over Japanese renters on Indian lands. White settlers fear rental drops from Fall’s lease ban while Yakima merchants urge evacuation to Montana where Japs might find work with wool growers like R. J. Barr. A December 14 meeting will decide the course.

Mrs. W. W. Hamilton, Montana state representative, with Deputy Tom Morgan, arrested John Berkebile alias Jim Jones in Bothell after a five month manhunt. Berkebile, convicted of arson in Dodson, Montana, was released on $5000 bond posted by Hamilton. He vanished July 4. Hamilton pursued across cities and states and vowed to escort him back.
Ray Cayze of Sumner, injured in a truck fall on August 22 near Sumner, wore a fitted plaster cast after three months. He was treated by Dr. B. J. Gilshannon and Dr. W. B. Mitchell and credits them for his recovery as he plans to switch to a leather collar.
James E. K. Mahoney was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Walla Walla today, following execution for the murder of his wife in Seattle. Rev. Father Stephen Buckley officiated at the service.
For the second time in under three days a Seattle clergyman brands Mayor EF. 4d. Brown a liar. The earlier accusation occurred Sunday night when Rev. Uhauncey J. speaks out. The report notes ongoing public controversy surrounding the mayor and statements attributed to him.
Mayor Brown’s week includes denouncement by University of Washington Daily over comments at a varsity ball, a pulpit accusation by Rev Chauncey J Hawkins, and alleged bribery hints. Officials accuse him of corruption in the federal prohibition office and barring prisoners, while bootlegger ties are alleged. Council clashes, summons for 20 witnesses, and charges of deceit follow the accusations.
In a tense exchange at Plymouth Congregational church Rev. H. S. Chatterton accuses Mayor Brown of political missteps over a city dance hall campaign. Brown counters with claims of fabrication as the Federation of Churches faces financial strain.
Seattle mayor E J Brown charged a federal prohibition case involved a prisoner held incom municado at the city jail who paid his lawyer Bert Northrop 300 dollars to secure release without trial. Brown said he will present witnesses to the grand jury and criticized police and federal handling of arrests.
