Extra edition reports a fire at the Armetrone cork factory in Pittsburg after a Deller exploded. One man, Robert Hanlon, is dead and six workers are severely burned as hundreds of girls escape through overcrowded stairways with firefighters aiding the evacuation.
Judge Bell yesterday dismissed the injunction brought by the Comique Theater Company against Tom and John Considine to restrain interference with Comique theater management. Peace was restored as the Comique management received a brief option to purchase the vaudeville interests of the unit.
Ernest Cashel, convicted of murder and under death sentence, overpowered guards in his own cell at Calvary Barracks and escaped with keys and revolvers. He unlocked his shackles, walked out, and remains at large as officers pursue him. Cashel’s brother John supplied the firearms amid a prior Humboldt voyage injury claim.
Charles Ford De Success yesterday filed suit in the superior court to recover 1466 damages from the Humboldt Steamship Company for personal injury due to an injured knee. The action seeks the specified compensation and attributes fault to the defendant in relation to the incident.
Robert Beardsley, 21, was arrested after forging his mother's checks totaling eight dollars and staging a death by self harm to fake his end. Detectives Kennedy and Byrne tailed him to the Occidental hotel and he confessed at police headquarters, admitting the ruse aimed at deceiving others.
W J Shaw of Cincinnati reports to The Star on a large iron ore deposit behind Grays Harbor on the Pacific coast. He says the ore could transform U S iron industry by enabling low cost production and a plant for recovery and melting at about one-fifth the usual expense. Shaw believes this is the only coast deposit of its kind, and he will seek local investor interest in Seattle to develop it.
The city street committees voted to remit the $1 penalty assessed against contractor Timothy Ryan for a six day delay in completing his Yer ter Way concrete walks. Ryan argued delays came from the engineers late with grades and rainy weather. supporters cited his diligence and sympathy grew as the board granted an extension of time.
A colored waiter G W Smith was held up on Eighteenth Avenue near Olive Street. The robbers fled after finding nothing of value and Smith sought protection from A G Fisken. He later left, seeking a gun to defend himself. Also in court, George Peterson was fined for beating a horse with a crowbar. William Coleman fell into a ditch along the Northern Pacific track and was taken to Seattle General Hospital.
A local account blames the Republican board of public works for stalling Ryan and other contractors. Assistant Engineer Bott is questioned as to staffing, with delays in hiring and limited space at City Hall cited as reasons. Officials claim it would take three months to catch up without new orders.
Supreme Court sustains lower court finding that H Bt. John Dix, president of the Bank of Whatcom, must serve a penalty for bank note embezzlement. Dix was rearrested at Whatcom after bail release and failure to disclose conspiracy details to defraud depositors. The case involves borrowed capital, bank failure, and attempted extradition from England.
The floating body found near Thermans street on Wednesday afternoon is identified as Patrick McLevy, a marine fireman aboard the steamship Indiana which sailed for New York three weeks ago. McLevy drowned the night before the voyage and identification was made by Sailors' Union members who knew him for years.
The steamship Hyades under Captain Wright cleared yesterday for Oriental ports and will sail today carrying 6000 tons of American freight. Cargo includes 26000 sacks of flour from the state and 1900 bales of cotton from Texas plus merchandise from eastern cities bound for Russian Chinese and Japanese ports.
Dec. Jack Johnson, the colored world champion, will box BandY Ferguson at Colima tonight. Betting 10 to 1 favors Johnson with Ferguson aiming for a Jeffries match if he wins. If Johnson wins, Jeffries will be without a rival. many believe Johnson can beat the champion but Jeffries will not fight a black boxer.
Nominations for college and athletic offices at the University of Washington are made today with the election slated for next week. The general manager of athletics for next year heads the list, with C. F. Siamat discussed as the plausible candidate.
Indoor track action at Olympia featured Beattie and Tacoma competing in six events during the pre convention meet. Beattie edged Tacoma 6 to 5 in the tally, securing the win in a tight preliminary contest ahead of the MC A convention.
Chicago lightweight Jack Keefe and Gia Gardner, who drew with Martin Duffy, will meet in a ten round bout under a local athletic group tonight in Grand Rapids Michigan. Both fighters have trained steadily since the match was made and appear ready for a competitive contest. The report also notes a YWCA meeting in Grand Rapids with Mrs. A. E. It. present at the prior monthly session.
Dee Ban Francisco Med. J. Taylor announces Aurelio Nuerreratsas manager Charles Neary will promote a January Milwaukee match between Huerrera and Neary at two pounds. The Mexican fighter considers the weight a bit heavy for him.
Word from McMillan captain of the Wortland team says he cannot bring his squad to Portland and requests Seattle to come down there. Beattie cannot travel to Portland with the Seattel side, so the game is practically canceled.
In San Francisco on December 11 Jack Cordell who beat Huerrera recently has drawn Charlie Seliger for a late month date. If Cordell wins this match he will pursue a long series of Heatweights including Wille Fitzgerald and Jim Britt.
In New York close six day race action Moran and K trailed by one lap after losing partners. They could not recover the lap. Frank Kramer set a half mile indoor unpaced record of 632 5 seconds last night strengthening the meet's record pace.
James A. Hart was named by the National League to absorb the California coast league. He will depart immediately to negotiate a settlement with that league as the board adjourned after a brief session.
In Spokane a ministers and lay committee met with Mayor Boyer and Police Commissioner Root to discuss the city social evil. Rev George R Wallace warned that officials who fail to enforce laws may face a grand jury and penalties. The mayor doubted eradication of vice and did not commit to action.
Balyvimonre Maryland December 11 large audience of civil service reformers attended the second day of the annual National Civil Service Reform League convention.
8 G Yerkes appointed as general western passenger agent of the Great Northern railroad by General Passenger Agent Whitney to succeed A B C Dennis ton who has resigned. Yerkes, well known in this city, will start duties January 2.
