A frightful disaster at coal mine No. 7 in Carbonado Washington at 11 this morning left sixty to seventy believed dead. A blast from fire damp caused roof caving and poisonous gas sealed the fate of many entombed workers as families gathered in panic at the mine mouth. Rescue efforts began amid chaotic scenes.
A Seattle inquiry reveals Union Pacific plans to reach Beattie within eighteen months using Northern Pacific track rights. The deal reportedly includes Seattle Terminal Company assets, tide lands between Colorado and Whatcom, and freight yard development plus grain elevators and passenger terminals.
Joe Harvey backer Dave Argyle of the California Club and Bill Dormer, once a leading gambler here, move to California courts over a San Francisco gambling raid. In Columbia South Carolina the new Industrial Home for Negro boys and girls was dedicated with Bishop Grant of Philadelphia delivering the dedicatory sermon. Three youths ages about 12 to 15 attempted to wreck a Weat Shore express by placing ties on the track in a rock cut between Mindenville and Indian Castle. The train stopped with no damage. Charles Lasher, 13, was arrested while two other youths escaped. A Nome miners meeting on land leases and wharf rights was postponed by telegram requests from prominent miners.
