United Press reports a severe blast at the Monogan coal mine in Virginia. Officials fear 500 to 700 workers were inside when the explosion struck, with rescuers reporting many remains or critical injuries as they search through ruined passages and connect tunnels.

A young man modeled as C. L. Marka of Richmond California attempted to pass a Standard Company check in Richmond California on Monday. He drew a revolver from his pocket and shot himself in the head as he entered the headquarters. he died about an hour later.
Morrie Buck, once a Los Angeles coachman, was hanged at San Quentin Prison at 10 50 am for the murder of Mrs Charles A Canfield wife of a wealthy oil operator of Los Angeles dated January 27 1906 Buck sought funds from Mrs Canfield to start a bakery after being discharged for incompetency He shot her twice the first shot grazing her abdomen and the second in the breast She died instantly His defense of insanity failed and the jury returned a verdict of murder with malice
The city street committee ordered the vacation of several streets totaling about 40,000 dollars in potential property value. The front end of the passenger car was wrecked and the motorman was slightly injured. few passengers were aboard and all escaped serious harm.
In San Francisco a detective agency head Thomas McCarthy died after a quarrel with Dr. KB Lee who has been arrested. McCarthy was stabbed by an umbrella point and died nearly 24 hours later. The dispute reportedly centered on a woman. In Santa Monica, Mys, A. Lester, sister of ex senator John P. Jones, died at home.
Hert Snyder, sought on a warrant for attempting to kidnap his estranged wife, fell from a streetcar on Firatav Wednesday night injuring a leg. He was taken to Pacific hospital where an officer with the writ located him. The former Mrs Snyder says he threatened to kill her and the case will proceed when he recovers.
W J Brydh arrived in Chicago from Washington and says he agrees with President Roosevelt on establishing a central government bank and a modern financial system. He asserts support for a national monetary reform and central bank authority.
