The Star urges Seattle men to complete subscriptions for the Community Chest to fund welfare and charitable groups next year. It promotes the Chest as a modern, efficient method replacing multiple drives and asks loyal citizens to give generously to aid the sick, poor, crippled, and children.
A satirical column riffs on Seattle vice, prohibition, ministers, and dance halls. It jokes about mayoral politics, taxes, and public entertainment while tossing quips about boxing bribes, Houdini, and holiday gifts.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday morning denied the appeal of Dolly Johnson convicted of forgery in the James Mahoney murder case. Prosecuting Attorney Malcom Douglas sought to raise her bond from 5000 to 10000 and a bench warrant was issued. Johnson was reported ill when the deputy sheriff tried to deliver the order.
Col George M Rice resigns as streets and sewers superintendent to the city council in a move to harmony and progress. He backs mayoral nominee W D Barkhuff and withdraws to leave the field open. Councilman Philip Tindall praises Rice’s service and duty.
Georges Clemenceau met President Harding in a 45 minute White House talks urging the United States to reassert its influence in Europe to avert disaster. The veteran French leader outlined core themes from his four major addresses as he pressed for a U S return to European affairs.
Madalynne Obenchain and Arthur C. Barch were freed after five juries failed to reach a verdict on the midnight murder of John Belton Kennedy near his bungalow. District Attorney Woolwine dismissed the case on motion. Barch was sent to a county hospital psychiatric ward for an insanity hearing, while Obenchain prepared to leave town to plan her future.
Arthur Defol, 29, a painter, was shot at 42nd Ave and Admiral Way after resisting two armed robbers. He’s in grave condition with a chest wound though an X-ray may show his lung was spared. A man named J M Renee helped move him to safety before police arrived. A suspect, William F. Kelly, alias Jack Murray, was arrested with a revolver but claimed an alibi. Two other victims from recent days, S B Evans and Patrolman J F Stevens, are reported to be recovering in local hospitals.
Mayor Brown says the city must lower carfare and insists the Stone and Webster contract is untouchable if funds cannot be found. The court of appeals ruling that the railway must pay its own way fuels a showdown as Erickson's five-cent fare ordinance gains momentum at Seattle City Hall.
Miss Clara Shanks serves as cashier for the local Veterans Bureau in Seattle. The Seattle office, headquarters of the 13th district, leads the nation in reinstated government insurance for former service members. Shanks, born in Terre Haute, Indiana, has worked with the bureau since 1918 and in Seattle since December 7, 1921. Bradley Fowlkes credits her winning ways for much of the office’s success.
Police hunted Charles Butt an escaped convicted murderer who slipped from Port Angeles county jail during a snowstorm. He used two hacksaw blades to widen a window opening, greased with soap to crawl through, while his cellmate Riley remained jailed. Authorities sought aid from sheriffs associations as footprints were wiped by fresh snow.
Clara Phillips, convicted in a famous hammer murder, is missing from Los Angeles County jail. Sheriff Traeger reports an elaborate break plot with bars sawed on the alley side and an outside help theory. Posses are formed and calls broadcast across Southern California as confusion reigns at the jail.
Frank Waterhouse, head of a bankrupt firm and president of the Chamber of Commerce, regained control of a Seattle taxicab company through a judge’s ruling. Judge Everett Smith held a stock transfer to secure Waterhouse interests was valid, restoring his control after the company went into receivership. Waterhouse also controls related Stevedoring and Investment firms. William T. Laubie challenged the transfer, arguing bankruptcy timing, but the judge sided with Waterhouse.
James Redmond and Lynch, leaders of a bank gang, and a bank messenger were convicted and sentenced to ten years in Walla Walla prison after the state supreme court affirmed a jury verdict rendered in Judge Otis Brinker’s court following the July 14, 1921 holdup.
