Voters will decide next Tuesday on four bond propositions totaling 1 076 000 for a new city hall jail hospital and expanded municipal lighting. The Star urges careful civic consideration noting financial impacts and urging prudent, revenue backed planning.
Mrs. Emma Barr, wife of Rev Ysane Barr, seeks a divorce for desertion and non-support from England where he currently resides. She testified he deserted her in 1902 and provided nothing for over a year, has no alimony request, and the couple have no children. Judge Hanford set a short session for formalities in Seattle.
A five week old sketch from within Japanese lines depicts Port Arthur showing ground configuration. Foreground belongs to the Japanese with a view of Russian forts and the town in the distance. Four Japanese ships appear faintly on the horizon as Russian works near Golden Hill were captured by the Japanese.
O Girle a Klondike retiree with Roosevelt hotel suite connections ended a night in a Seattle police station after a jovial spree with two young women Alma Berryman and Paulina Livingston. They pleaded guilty and were fined five dollars each while Girle himself was freed on $50 bail.
A partially burned body found in a cabin 24 miles north of Sulphur Springs, Montana, is identified as Homer A. Ward a young ranchman. Ward appears to have been shot before the fire destroyed the scene prompting a homicide investigation.
The crime scene shows bedclothes and furniture around the body piled and burned in an effort to consume evidence. No motive is known. The victim was a brother-in-law of Gallatin County Attorney Pease.
In Ballard, Cox, a taxpayer, won a temporary injunction in superior court to stop Mayor Zook from signing the Nov 9 ordinance granting L Brewer a city lighting franchise. The court bars publication of the ordinance and council clerks from action until a hearing. Cox alleges improper passage and higher bribes offered to council members. Judge Bell to hear Monday morning.
Melbourne's Hon. Francia Barrington-Hopkins arrived at the Washington hotel from the East with a valet, a bull terrier and fourteen handbags. Dressed in a yellow paddock coat and gray tweeds, he entertained staff with talk of buying the hotel to enjoy the view and to dismiss a staff member. He asked the manager about the price, then left with his entourage after the encounter, leaving guests curious who he is.
Lou Jenkins, a Black woman, died in a morning fire that destroyed a double tenement, two cottages, and a residence. Two firemen were injured and twenty five occupants narrowly escaped.
Real estate and banking groups debated four proposed bonds for Seattle city hall sites as critics warned of graft and high taxes. Speakers opposed the $150,000 land purchase bond for an undefined site, urging voters to reject it amid accusations of councilmen seeking graft.
The Seattle Athletic Club faces action from Mayor Ballinger and Chief Delaney over a planned high profile event they call a smoker.
