The company accepts the ship board offer to take over traction lines for the war and six months after. It guarantees rental equal to profits of the past five years and agrees to buy juice from the company to operate the lines, adding hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.
Allied forces pierced the German Somme line south of Peronne and breached Hindenburg defenses while Combles fell south of Bapaume. Peronne and Noyon areas are threatened, with progress reported near the Scarpe and further French gains south of Peronne. North of Soissons a large enemy cavalry charge was stopped by Americans and French forces.
City officials oppose a six cent fare with a one cent transfer charge demanded by the United States Shipping Board. Puget Sound Traction and Rainier Valley lines accept the terms, while the mayor and council prepare a reply amid talk of drastic government action.
The Shipping Board’s settlement offer to resolve the car line muddle draws sharp criticism for ignoring city and traction company proposals. United Press reports British troops punched through the Somme line south of Peronne with the town invested from the west and flanked from the south while French and American forces win in other sectors.
New York reports say American troops push north of Soissons in cooperation with French and British to pressure the Germans along the Hindenburg line. Advancing on the Veale and Somme fronts, the allies threaten to outflank the Chemin des Dames defenses as Von Hindenburg shifts toward St. Quentin.
Quotas from all 12 Seattle draft boards will depart for Camp Lewis on September 6 marking the largest one month contingent. A farewell banquet and parade are being arranged by the King County Council of Defense.
Cadet Ellis B. Babcock and Lieut. F R. McGiffin died when their aircraft fell 2000 feet during a loop at Call field Wichita Falls. McGiffin, a Canadian, married in San Francisco in May as he received his commission. His wife was at the field at the time of the crash.
British forces tighten around the Peronne rail base on the Somme as Bapaume falls. Australians approach from the south and near the river northward, with bridges destroyed and German guns withdrawing toward the Scarpe.
