Rome reports Italy has declared war on Germany citing German land and sea aid to Austria. A formal statement was sent to the German foreign office via Switzerland. Italians massed in Piazza Colonna cheering anti German slogans and a royal decree seized Palazzo de Venezia.
The Pacific Mail liner Ecuador sailed from San Francisco with the American flag, resuming U S passenger service to the Pacific. A naval escort honored the event as three vessels were purchased and three more promised, ending two years of Japanese lines’ monopoly.
