The state health board issues simple hygiene rules for students before the new session begins in two weeks. Children are advised not to put fingers, pens, money, or apple cores in the mouth and to avoid wetting digits when turning book pages or handling coins.
Cleveland, Aug 4. Superintendent Elson announces a campaign against the school book trust. He has collected home reviewed editions and found western cities paid 26 cents less per book than Cleveland, with freight added. Supervisors nationwide watch the fight, seeing a potential victory to spur attacks on the trust.
Deputy Sheriff McGregan from Tecota arrived in Seattle yesterday and arrested Mrs. Nettleton on a grand larceny charge. She had recently been fined for operating a blind pig and jailed in the county facility.

The 1906 northwest tennis season concluded with prize presentations and speeches as Payne of Tacoma defeated Joe Tyler Beattie 7 6 3 4 6 4 in a hard fought match. The local Tyler and Russell easily beat Payne and Armatrona 6 4 0 4 6 3 in doubles. The Ryan sisters claimed the ladies singles with Mise K Ryan winning, and the Ryan sisters won the ladies doubles while Pooley and Minas A Ryan took mixed doubles in a close contest.
At Butte Montana Aug 4 the world record for three eighths of a mile in four miles was broken as Atoka clocked 133 percent. Races were delayed by the prior day’s heavy rain and events were postponed while the track remained in poor condition. Redan won the five furlongs with Grenore second and Blue Creage third. Legatee led the mile and a sixteenth with Dr Berneys second and The Regent third. Other winners included Kila in the one mile, Invasion in five furlongs, Atoka in three furlongs, and Jillette in the mile. Time marks ranged from 38 to 1:46.
Readevilile Mane features a late afternoon program with Gold Dust Maid driven by Geera taking the Ponkapoag stake by trotting for 2:10 class. The field included Oro Mack Mack Roberta Van Zandt Watson Helen Norte and Alexander in a multi-heat pacing event. Brenda York captured two heats in American Horse Breeders Futurity pacing, beating John ard with times around 2:18 and 2:12.
