In Chadron Nebraska on August 22 a cowboy and ranchers tried to water horses near White River when Gardiner’s horse sank in quicksand. Ed Jones rode to aid Gardiner and saved him by pulling him from the saddle using a lasso.
Tromsbor Norway Aug 22 Capt Naseme of the fishing vessel Cecelia reports meeting the Nathorst expedition sent by King Oscar of Sweden to Sabine Island seventy five degrees north in search of Andree. Nathorst party found no trace of her.
Major Grenier testifies for Dreyfus as Labori reenters the defense. Mercier falters under cross examination while Labort presses for truth about the Schneider forgery. Dreyfus shows fatigue yet speaks clearly with rising audience energy and Mme Rejane attends.
Four Hethiehem boys who stole nearly a ton of horseshoes from a blacksmith were forced to carry them back one by one along the main street. They traveled about a third of a mile each and were then publicly spanked by their parents.

An association of individual ice traders and harvesters is being organized in Albany to oppose the American Ice Co which absorbed the Consolidated Ice Co of New York and other ice firms from Maine to Philadelphia. A meeting with over forty dealers led to a unanimous decision to unite for mutual benefit and protection. A committee was appointed to draft a plan to be presented at a September meeting.
The fourteenth annual national encampment of the Union Veterans opened today with about 6,000 attendees. The Woman's Veteran Relief Association holds its annual gathering in conjunction with the event.
The fourth annual council of the Young Men's Institute devoted most of its session to a finance report proposing an insurance provision in the regulations. The plan, led by J. J. Morgan of Cincinnati, represents the YM I Insurance Company. Afternoon focused on appropriations.

Chas M M Maxwell an electrician aboard the United States transport Athenian filed a libel in federal court against the steamer and Canadian Pacific Railway owners seeking 6000 damages for injuries from falling through an open unguarded hatch and landing on coal in the hold. He claims 5000 in personal inconvenience and the case awaits trial.
John Smithson, arriving from the north on the steamer Roanoke, reports a harsh toll in the Kotzebue district. He says at least eighty men died in six months, many unnamed, with fifteen dying in three weeks at Aurora camp. Medicines were scarce or overpriced, and graves were shallow. Dr. Jackson plans to bring down a complete list of the dead.
