The pope Giuseppe Sarto was born June 2, 1835 in Riese Italy and elected pope by the College of Cardinals on August 4 1903 after a five day conclave. He became Pius X and hailed from a peasant family. His mother died in 1894 and he had eight siblings. He grew up near Venice and was aided by Cardinal Monico in education. He was a tall man with blue eyes and a sonorous voice.
