A three night Leavitt carnival in Seattle was shut down by Police Chief W B Severyns amid street blockages and nuisance complaints. Officials ordered sideshows removed while Arena and Hippodrome events under the Veterans of Foreign Wars continued.
Burglars entered the Welcome hotel on Jackson Street early Friday and stole jewels valued at 3000 dollars from Jagiro Suginaro a Japanese guest. Suginaro reports $3000 in jewels stolen and asks for the sign changed to Verboten.
Police closed a Fifth Ave and University St carnival Thursday night. Thomas Jefferson Casey, a congressional candidate on a light wines and beer platform, urged voters with an impassioned plea. Attendees left satisfied after improvised fun and a crowd-pleasing event.
Nine people were injured when a three car interurban trolley on the Niagara Falls high speed line collided with a dynamite excavation explosion three miles north of Buffalo. The line runs between Niagara Falls and Buffalo and is operated by the International Railway Co. which has had union strike action for over seven weeks. About 30 other passengers were shaken up.
At Philadelphia Aug 18 miners and operators predicted peace by Monday with miners returning to work at the old wage scale. A final agreement may be signed at this afternoon's joint meeting after a day of talks that brought the dispute to the verge of solution.
The county city building registers Avridge Mann and others with four days left to register. If you registered since January 1 or voted in the last mayoralty race you do not need to re register. The registration office is open all day.
Coroner begins post mortem on Virginia Murray 38 at home after she fell ill following a lettuce and mayonnaise dinner. Husband Charles Murray reports he ate all but salad milad and doctors seek toxin clues from mayonnaise samples to determine if poisoning or ptomaine poisoning caused her death.
Baltimore dispatch reports bandits held up Hicks Case Norris Co. contractor William B. Norris and others, taking a $6 756 payroll. Norris was seriously injured as robbers seized the cash and fled.
Navy hydrographic data released today indicates a huge oil field lies beneath the Gulf of Mexico. Captains report oil bubbling at the surface and slicks, fueling naval speculation on how to extract the offshore resource.
David Steel a 17 year old farmer's son admitted killing 75 year old Mrs Hanna Hess with a butcher knife on the Hess farm north of Columbus. He then tried to drown himself in a bathtub and later shot himself in the abdomen with a revolver.
Vice President Calvin Coolidge wraps up a Pacific Northwest tour with a Tacoma stop on Thursday afternoon. He and Mrs. Coolidge, their two sons John and Calvin, and guests Mr and Mrs F W Stearns left Seattle at 2 p m for Tacoma en route to the East via the Canadian Pacific railway.
Fire broke out last night and is being fought by fire boats and land units. The blaze is reported to be causing considerable damage to the Union Stock Yards in Chicago.
In Bellingham on August 13 65 year old Austin shot and mortally wounded 45 year old D H Green near the Blaine border with a single barreled shotgun. Green died four hours later after years of enmity between the bachelor farmers.
Two men were held in the city jail Friday without bail on booze charges. Dan Robertt, 34, 662 Jackson St. S. E., jailed for violating the state liquor law. John Srezenik, 47, miner, 4115 49th Ave. S. W., arrested for violating the city ordinance. A quantity of moonshine whisky was seized as evidence.
Claude Humphries aged 65 was fatally injured when struck by a Fremont Transfer Co. truck at Second Ave and Columbia St. He was rushed to city hospital and dying Friday. The driver C. H. Cordell stated Humphries stepped from the safety zone into the path of the vehicle as brakes failed to stop.
Chicago reports six deaths and numerous prostrations as a heat wave ends with cooler air moving in from a wind shift. The Weather Bureau warned of lingering heat hotspots but expected relief across the region.
The 23rd Avenue streetcar line will be renamed the Montlake line. The change was officially decreed Thursday by the council utilities committee.
Burglars moved a portable house from a location at 1th ave and W Galer st overnight. The owner, Mrs Ada Young of 115 Olympic place, found only the foundations remaining while the house itself vanished. Police seek portable burglars.
In New York Aug 14 a three year old boy Antonio Lavarone was kidnapped and held for ransom. He and his mother vanished on June 23 triggering a nationwide alarm. Kidnappers demanded 400 dollars. the father paid 200. The boy was returned unharmed after being kept by conspirators in Syracuse.
In Seattle at Woodland Park Zoo Brabell the Numidian lioness kills one of her twin cubs to protect the remaining infant from captivity. Keeper Knudson describes the act as a protective mother’s instinct and warns further disturbance could provoke another killing. The father Ole rests nearby as crowds watch in fascination and fear.
The city will begin building the West Spokane Street bridge immediately after settling a $350,000 lawsuit with Bascule Bridge Company of Chicago. The compromise pays the firm $50,000 plus $26,000 for using its plans, ending a over three year dispute that blocked the project.
More than 100 divers gather in Lake Washington canal this Saturday for the third annual Seattle Star City swimming meet. Races include girls boys men and women with high and fancy diving from a 26 foot tower and 10 foot board. The mile marathon finals for men and women cap the program and Crystal Pool teams prepare large entries under veteran manager Dad Henry.
President Harding vows to use government power to stabilize transportation and fuel supply amid coal and rail disputes. He seeks a temporary national coal authority, a coal commission, and enforcement of railroad board decisions while opposing unions’ destruction and condemning Herrin violence. He notes coal industry dependence on United Mine Workers and calls for coal industry reorganization.
A bomb exploded on the roof of the Texas & Pacific roundhouse in Dallas. One man was slightly injured while 15 others escaped injury with narrow margins. The incident occurred on August 18. Police investigated the blast and secured the site.
New York August 18 There is no prospect of a settlement today, Warren Stone Brotherhood chief said at the close of the morning peace conference between rail executives and union leaders. Stone expressed optimism about future talks.
In Havre Montana an inquest was to be held today into the death of George E. Stambaugh a Northern brakeman killed Wednesday night by railroad guard Harry J. Stiner. Stiner says he acted in self defense.
Seven known dead and four missing as northern Minnesota forest fires rage for three weeks. Governor Preus orders two National Guard companies from Duluth with four more on standby. Airplanes assist observation and firefighting near Eveleth Kelsey Virginia Hibbing Duluth and White Bear area. Adjutant General Review to set Duluth headquarters as the blaze threatens Central Lake and nearby cottages. The governor calls this state’s worst since 1918 with 400 deaths in that year.
A cloudburst in Durango Colorado yesterday injured two men and caused extensive property damage. Water flooded streets and basements, with debris filling roadways. The storm affected southwestern Colorado as well.
The Chicago elevated lines announce a weekly transferable ticket for 1.25 dollars usable by the owner any number of times. Only one rider per ticket. Casual riders can buy three tickets for 25 cents. Current rate remains four tickets for 35 cents or 10 cents per ride.
