Clarence Darrow is freed as not guilty of corruptly influencing a juror in the McNamara case. The verdict was read by Foreman Williams after 37 minutes of deliberation in Los Angeles. The courtroom erupted in applause as Darrow embraced his wife and the jurors received heartfelt thanks.
A Yale graduate from a prominent Seattle family is described as a morphine addict who improved while jailed on an open charge after a guard fed him sugar pills believed to contain morphine. The man later left home, relapsed, and was found unconscious with morphine pills again in his possession.
The state progressive conference meets this afternoon to complete the creation of a new party, with many candidates including A. V. Fawcett of Tacoma withdrawing from the old party. Joe Martinez accidentally discharged a shotgun while cleaning it in Oxnard California today blowing apart his 17 month old sister. The mother holding the child watched but was uninjured. Martinez and his mother were taken to hospital in shock and grief officials feared the mother would not recover.
Lady Decies Vivien Gould of New York gives birth to a girl in Kent. The family had planned for a son to inherit the vast estates. Preparations had been made at multiple estates to celebrate a son. The marriage had sparked protests due to the young bride.
In Tacoma a couple, Thomas Thompson and his wife, endured six years of unhappiness amid constant quarrels. After reconciling, a minor dispute led to tragedy as Thompson left then returned home and later killed himself, leaving three children and a note of blame unresolved.
Mrs Marion Stevens widow of 34 called grief from a rejected love drove her to attempt suicide at the Quinn hotel in Seattle. She jabbed a hat pin into her arm then choked herself with a towel before fellow guests hearing her cries rescued her. She is now at the city hospital in no danger. She had lived in the hotel for four weeks, never leaving bed, saying grief over a missed marriage shattered her will to live.
A coroner reports the deceased swallowed carbolic acid, enough to kill six men, allowing him to shirk family duties. The widow resumes work, bearing the burden alone.
Representative H D Buchanan and H L Klock filed withdrawals from the standout party in the 47th district this morning with the county auditor. Victor Zednick and Dr J Tate Mason plan to wait for progressives meeting in Eilers hall this afternoon before acting.
